Description of Maine Maine is the most Eastern and the most Northern State of
the 48 States. And is the first state
to see the Sun rise each morning.
Maine is the largest of the “New England” States. Maine’s only Interstate Highway I-95 runs
from the Southern Maine Boarder with New Hampshire at Kittery, and continues
Northeast to Holton, Maine on the border with Cannada. Iconic US Route 1 runs East from Fort Kent
Maine along the Canadian border to the coast of Maine following the seashore to the New
Hampshire border and continue South all the way to Key West, Florida. Maine is the most densely forested State, and the
least populated State East of the Mississippi River. With a population of 1.2
million people there are WAY MORE trees than people in Maine. The “Coast of Maine” is known for its many “Rockey
Fingers of Lands Ends Points” that jut out miles into the sea forming many
long narrow bays famous for their high tides and “rip currents” formed by
joining rivers. And those waters are
all colorfully marked with numerous iconic lobster buoys stayed to the points
where those clawed crustations are raised up out of the cold saltwater. The
“Western Highlands of Maine” are formed by the final peeks of the Appalachian
Range with its “Famous Appalachian Trail” with a starting point in Main a top
of Mount Katahdin in Baxter
State Park and stretches South all the way to Georgia. The Appalachian Trail is a 2,190+ mile long
public footpath that traverses the scenic, wooded, pastoral, wild, and
culturally resonant lands of the Appalachian Mountains. Conceived in 1921,
built by private citizens, and completed in 1937, today the trail is managed
by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Appalachian Trail
Conservancy, numerous state agencies and thousands of volunteers, (from the
Web Site). There are several Ski Resorts in the “Western Hills”. Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the
highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline of the United States, an
abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. At 4 million visits a
year, it's one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United
States. Visitors enjoy 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking
trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. Acadia National Park is
considered a “Crown Jewel” of the East Coast. From: Acadia National Park (U.S. National Park Service) Read More on Acadia and View
